The name “Lingos” derives from the ancient hero Lingos (or Lingeas), who acted in our region.

The region was named after him Lyngistida Kingdom of Lyngistes. Grandson of the princess Hevridiki of Lyngistes was Alexander the Great, who glorified the Macedonian and Greek spirit all around the world at that time known. In the area of Florina, the following major cities were located: Irakleia ang Lyngistida (so called Florina since 2000 B.C.), Meliton, Kella and Pesseon.
