The Florina prefecture is the entrance for two of the largest European hiking trails, the E4 and the E6.
The E4 trail begins in the Pyrénées, passes the Alps and by cutting across former Yugoslavia it enters Greece through the Niki border in Florina, ending up at the Tainaro cape. In the Florina region, the trail passes through the Varnounta and Verno mountains, and heading south and south-east via Agios Panteleimonas it reaches the Towers of Eordea. Trail E6 enters the prefecture from Voras, continues in a south-west direction towards Verno where it crosses the E4 trail in Derveni; it then continues towards Varnounta and the Prespes lakes and from there it moves towards the coasts of Epirus. All five routes (1st route: Florina – Nymphaion: Via the E4 trail, 2nd route: Vigla – Agios Germanos: Via the E6 trail, 3rd route: Mountain hiking in Voras (Rumanian School – Prophitis Ilias), 4th route: Tour of Lake Mikri Prespa. Local trail, 5th route: Vigla - Melas. Local trail) are truly enchanting and include main roads, forest and rural roads, as well as trails, whereas with the E4 trail one can also cross Lake Vegoritis in a boat. The combination of all of the above routes constitutes a unique experience. |
